Since its rollout in 2015, Windows 10 has slowly climbed the operating system hierarchy. With a 25.2% market share, it is second only to Microsoft’s earlier Windows 7 iteration which holds the top spot at 48.4%.
That translates into 400 million devices using Windows 10 across 192 countries and represents an operating system that has seen only one significant update in its two-year history — until now.
The next update to Windows 10, called the Creators Update, is expected to be released early in the second quarter of 2017. In fact, Microsoft is already stirring up anticipation for it by mentioning it in the Windows Update area (on your Windows 10 device).
Creative professionals especially will enjoy some of the key new features of the Creators Update which Microsoft no doubt hopes will spur even greater adoption of the operating system.
Let’s take a look at six of the exciting new features promised in the Windows 10 Creators Update.
6 New Features In The Windows 10 Creators Update For Creative Professionals
Microsoft calls its long-awaited update “the next wave of innovation,” saying the Creators Update lets you “do amazing things in 3D and virtual reality, [and] quickly connect and share with your key people…” Indeed, the software giant has its sights set squarely on creative professionals with the new features designed to enhance the development and creation process.
Here are some of the highlights.
New 3D Tools
Microsoft has been getting ready for 3D functionality for a while now, and the new version of Windows 10 will set the table for what it sees as the shape of things to come. The Creators Update will introduce a host of 3D creation tools, including:
Paint 3D. The lonely MS Paint has been given a huge boost thanks to the introduction of Paint 3D. This revamped application lets you create 3D models from 2D images that you can import from photographs, sketches from the Surface Pen, or virtually anywhere else. It will even let you scan landscapes and items with your smartphone camera and transform them into three dimensions.
Paint 3D promises to be a three-dimensional sandbox that artists and creators can use to make stunning graphics, models, and animations.
3D printing support. The Creators Update allows for 3D printing functionality, giving you the tools you need to create models and then directly exporting them to a 3D printer.
Whether it is an existing rendering or a specifically-designed model, the days of having to rely on specialized 3D printing applications have apparently passed.
3D Office integration. The Microsoft Office suite of productivity applications will also get a boost with the introduction of 3D integration support. You will be able to add 3D textures to PowerPoint presentations and eventually be able to showcase them in all of the Office software programs.
Turbocharge Your Writing
Windows Ink Surface Pen Word integration. When Microsoft introduced Windows Ink to shore up its pen support, it saw an opportunity to allow for faster and more creative use of its applications. That trend continues with the Creators Update which introduces Surface Pen support in Word, giving writers the capability to write, alter, delete and annotate text like never before.
Groove Music Maker. Aiming to compete with Apple’s GarageBand, Microsoft introduces Groove Music Maker with the Creators Update. This new application is a digital music studio allowing musicians to create and layer tracks, sample audio and incorporate BPM into their creations.
Virtual Reality Takes Off
VR integration. Windows 10 finally gets its much-vaunted virtual reality integration with the Creators Update, giving hardware partners the opportunity to offer compatible VR headsets at affordable prices.
This combination, in turn, provides developers with a new avenue to explore with the opportunity to provide and showcase their applications and games through the Windows Store.
Ultimately, it is part of a larger strategy to expand the VR experience in Windows 10 and gives creators more of a chance to push the boundaries of what VR can do.
Built For Creators
The Windows 10 update aims to boost the creative process by offering a set of new tools aimed squarely at creators and creative professionals. With new 3D tools, pen support for Word, music tools, and VR capabilities, the Creators Update promises to be the most significant revision of the operating system yet.
